ROTC Abolishment....???
POSTED AT 11:20 PM
The death of Mark Chua, a UST engineering student, have enforced the youth to outburst their complains about the ROTC curriculum. The implementation of female cadets have made the case worse because majority of the complaints are from female.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reasons for the abolishment are the following:
(Source:
http://rotc7.tripod.com/page4.html)
1. The abolition of the program is the stepping stone to end the cycle of irrelevance in our education.
2. The programs has failed to promote patronism. Instead it have supplied the youth with fear, violence and hatred amoung the ranks. (Hazing... [but this is already illegal])
3. It became a source of money for the corrupt protectors of ROTC. (maybe referring to the snacks the cadets have to provide)
4. It loads the parents with unecessary expenses for the uniforms and other service charges. (Students claim that they get the uniform after a semester)
5. ROTC violates the human rights. (Hazing...

)
6. It discriminates the third sex.
7. ROTC is undemocratic because it is
forced military training.
8. The leadership ROTC is promoting is not moral. (Influence of corrupt officials leads to corruption itself)
9. Nothing is learned from the training. (After ROTC students don't know what they gained)
10. The program was given time long enough to reform but unfortunately it did not.

My comments:
This is quite a touchy topic. The youth is now enraged with the government and now with each other. Sadly, they now have taken sides...
But let's be open minded...
The objectives of ROTC are stated clearly at the beginning of the training. It is true patronism and social awareness are some. But basic military combat are the few others.
The emotional torture are just some ways to intimidate aggression. It's boost up determination (if you are optimistic). If you are not, the presence of your platoon will lend you a hand. Teamwork is another objective.
I believe that the law have already stated that hazing is a crime and can be reported. But if it isn't hazing, endure the physical work for a while. The march and the post under the sun are just ways to discipline and give you a slight glimpse of what disastrious war may be. If ever there will be a WW3 (I really hope not), everyone will have to bear much more than that.
A waste of time if you clearly can't see the objectives of the training. A waste of money, well there are other ways to save for the uniform. The training foes not require new uniforms you can use the uniform during CAT days or borrow one.
Inside the DLSU campus, I havn't heard my blockmates complaining about the tardiness of the arrival of their uniform. This just proves that
NOT all institiutes have corrupt military training officials. And if there is at least one virtue there is still hope.
The reforms are already the implementation of the NSTP, where you can choose between ROTC or CWTC. But reforms to ROTC itself, there is none. It still teaches the students the same thing since the program ever started (during Kommonwelt).
People lack trust in the program so there is a need to
reistablish, but not necessarily abolish, although it is part of the process. There may be a problem with the methods of teaching that students are not clear with the objectives. But if you want immediate reforms, the reforms must come form the cadets. Take a look at ROTC at a different perpectives, at the positive light. Maybe the cadets may learn to enjoy it.
